Full-birding tour by some Puna steppes, lakes and gorges of this awesome part of the Argentina’s Andes. Starting in the low eastern valleys, the itinerary rapidly climbs to the arid shrublands of the Quebrada de Humahuaca (UNESCO’s World Heritage) for later plunging into the Puna steppes. It includes a visit to the beautiful Lake Pozuelos Natural Monument, one of the greatest havens for flamingoes and shorebirds, as well as to the endemic bird area of Yavi. Good chances to see several restricted range bird species, as well as excellent opportunities for nature photography.
Day-by-day
Day 1: Transfer-in (JUJ or SLA). Overnight: Jujuy city.
Day 2: Quebrada de Humahuaca. Overnight: Humahuaca.
Day 3: Lake Pozuelos Natural Monument. Overnight: La Quiaca or Yavi.
Day 4: Yavi area. Overnight: Jujuy city.
Day 5: Transfer out (JUJ or SLA).
Bird species
Puna Rhea, Puna Ibis, Puna Teal, Giant and Horned Coots, Andean Avocet, Puna Plover, Bare-eyed Ground-Dove, Bare-faced Ground-Dove, Golden-spot Ground-Dove, Giant Hummingbird, Wedge-tailed Hillstar, Andean Flicker, Creamy-bellied Canastero, Cordilleran Canastero, White-tipped Plantcutter, Brown-backed Mockingbird, Mourning Sierra-Finch, Bright-rumped Yellow-Finch, Citron-headed Yellow-Finch, among many others. Other wildlife: Vicuna.
Difficulty
For all kinds of people, in good health conditions. The tour involves a 800 km drive by paved and gravel roads. Short slow-pace walks over 3,600 meters above sea level are included.

Basic birding skills and previous experience is desired. We will provide participants with further information.
